Super Eagles draw Tanzania, Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar in 2027 AFCON Qualifiers
By Maxwell Kumoye
Three-time African champions, the Super Eagles, have been drawn against co-hosts Tanzania national football team, Guinea-Bissau national football team and Madagascar national football team in Group L of the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The draw ceremony for the qualification series was held on Tuesday, with 48 countries placed into 12 groups of four teams each as nations battle for places at the continental showpiece to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania in June 2027.
The top two teams from each group are expected to qualify for the tournament. However, because Tanzania are one of the co-hosts, only one other team may progress should the East Africans finish among the top two in Group L.
The draw is widely seen as favourable for Nigeria, who are expected to secure qualification to the 24-team competition they have won three times.
The qualification campaign will begin on September 21, 2026, while the final round of matches is scheduled to be completed in March 2027.
Meanwhile, four-time African champions, the Black Stars of Ghana, have been drawn in Group C alongside defending champions Cรดte d'Ivoire, Gambia and Somalia.a
The Black Stars will be eager to bounce back strongly after missing out on the 2025 AFCON in Morocco following a disappointing qualifying campaign in which they failed to win a match. Ghana had also endured consecutive group-stage exits in the previous two editions of the competition.
The opening two rounds of qualifiers are scheduled for the FIFA international window between September 21 and October 6, 2026, while Matchdays Three and Four will be played from November 9 to 17, 2026. The final qualification fixtures are billed for March 22 to 30, 2027.
Elsewhere, the Zambia national football team were drawn in Group I alongside Algeria, Togo and Burundi as they seek a return to Africa’s biggest football stage.
Cameroon has been paired in group G alongside Comoros, Namibia and Congo Republic.
