Nigeria’s charge for continental wrestling dominance gathered momentum on Friday in Alexandria as the country’s contingent impressed on Day 1 of the senior events at the African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria

This stellar performance is already drawing high praise from the nation’s diplomatic corps in Egypt.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Egypt, Musa Dauda, could not hide his excitement after witnessing a string of commanding performances in the qualifying rounds, where Team Nigeria powered into four finals with the prospect of more to come.

The Nigerian wrestlers dominated their bouts with authority, underlining their ambition to retain their continental crown, particularly in the women’s category and push toward a historic 15th African title.

Their display left the ambassador visibly impressed, especially given the level of competition from host nation Egypt.

“This is the spirit of Nigeria. I’m extremely proud of what they have done,” Dauda said. “I never knew Nigeria had this force in wrestling.”

With the decisive stages looming, the envoy revealed that efforts are already underway to galvanized support from Nigerians and the student community in Egypt to create a vibrant atmosphere for the team as they head into the finals.

He also reserved special praise for the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, commending his commitment to the welfare of the athletes and overall support for the delegation.

Leading the charge into the finals are Esther Kolawole, Hannah Ojo, Ogunsanya Christianah, and Jumoke Adekoye, all of whom secured their places with dominant outings.

More finalists are expected to emerge as the competition progresses.

The ambassador was joined in the stands by Ishaya Garba Senchi and Aisha Mustapha, as Nigerian officials rallied behind a team determined to once again stamp its authority on African wrestling.
