The football community has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Nigerian winger Victor Udoh at the age of 21, with former clubs Southampton FC and Royal Antwerp paying emotional tributes to the promising youngster.
Udoh, who was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s emerging football talents, spent six months with Southampton’s academy after joining the club in February 2025.
During his short spell on England’s south coast, the talented left winger featured in eight matches for the Saints’ Under-21 side in the Premier League 2.
Before his move to England, Udoh had developed through the ranks at Royal Antwerp, where he impressed for the club’s “Young Reds” team.
The Nigerian forward scored 12 goals in 27 appearances for the youth side and earned promotion to the first team, making 28 senior appearances for the Belgian outfit.
Following his departure from Southampton in September, Udoh continued his career in the Czech Republic, joining second-tier club Ceske Budejovice as he sought to revive his promising journey in European football.
In an emotional statement posted on social media, Southampton expressed deep sorrow over the player’s passing.
“We are devastated by the tragic passing of former player Victor Udoh at the age of 21,” the club wrote. “The thoughts of everyone at the club go out to Victor’s loved ones at this extremely difficult time.”
Royal Antwerp also paid tribute to their former academy graduate, describing the news as heartbreaking.
“With great dismay, RAFC has learned of the passing of former player Victor Udoh,” the Belgian club stated.
“Our thoughts are with Victor’s family, friends, and loved ones. We wish them much strength, support, and warmth during this particularly difficult time.”
Udoh’s death has sent shockwaves through the football community, especially among Nigerian football followers who had hoped to see the gifted winger rise to greater heights in Europe.
Though his life and career were cut painfully short, Victor Udoh will be remembered for his talent, determination, and the bright future many believed lay ahead of him.
