The 2nd Vice President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Akuchukwu Aghazu, has charged Team Nigeria athletes to give their very best as the 24th edition of the Senior African Athletics Championships gets underway in Accra, expressing confidence in the team’s readiness for the continental showpiece.
In her message to the Nigerian contingent, the AFN official urged the athletes to remain focused and united throughout the competition.
“We believe in your abilities and we know the sacrifices you have made to get to this stage. Go out there and make Nigeria proud. Compete with courage, discipline and the spirit of champions,” she said.
She also had warm words for the foreign-based athletes who travelled to Ghana to represent the country, describing their commitment as a huge boost for Team Nigeria.
“To our foreign-based athletes, we appreciate your dedication and willingness to honour the national call despite your tight schedules abroad. Your presence here shows your love and commitment to Nigeria,” she added.
The AFN Vice President equally applauded the efforts of the National Sports Commission under the leadership of Shehu Dikko and Bukola Olopade for prioritising the welfare of athletes and officials ahead of the championships.
“We must commend the National Sports Commission under Mallam Shehu Dikko and Honourable Bukola Olopade for putting athletes’ welfare first. The support given to the team has been commendable and it shows a renewed commitment to the growth of Nigerian sports,” she stated.
She further acknowledged the role of the media in promoting athletics and supporting Nigerian athletes on and off the track.
“The media has continued to stand by Nigerian athletics through quality coverage and publicity. We appreciate your efforts in telling the stories of our athletes and projecting the sport positively,” she said.
Nigeria is expected to compete strongly in several events as Africa’s top athletes battle for honours at the championship in Ghana.
