By Maxwell Kumoye
In a decisive show of confidence that sent a clear message across Nigeria’s media landscape, Senior High Chief Tony Akiotu, has emerged as the new Chairman of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria.
At the fiercely contested biennial election held in Abuja on Wednesday, Akiotu swept past his challenger, Raymond Dokpesi Jr. with a commanding 62 to 9 votes.
It wasn’t merely a victory, it was a devastating landslide endorsement of a man whose message had clearly resonated long before ballots were cast.
Days ahead of the poll, Akiotu had laid his cards on the table, unveiling a manifesto that spoke directly to an industry grappling with survival, relevance, and rapid technological change.
His pitch was simple but forceful:
• Continuity
• Collaboration
• Measurable progress and the broadcasters listened.
At the heart of Akiotu’s agenda is a battle for the soul and survival of Nigeria’s broadcasting industry.
With operational costs skyrocketing and choking stations nationwide, he has vowed to pursue aggressive cost-cutting strategies, from energy partnerships to infrastructure sharing and access to financing support.
His message was unmistakable, stabilize the industry, protect jobs, and stop the bleeding.
On digital transformation, he struck a careful but urgent tone, promising to work hand-in-hand with the National Broadcasting Commission to ensure that the digital switchover becomes a launchpad, not a landmine, for broadcasters.
Recognizing that technology is only as strong as the hands that wield it, Akiotu placed capacity building at the center of his vision, targeting practical, hands-on training in digital broadcasting, streaming, and emerging media trends.
The new BON Chairman, a consummate administrator and broadcaster is pushing for deeper collaboration among members, shared content, joint event coverage, and knowledge exchange as well as turning competitors into partners where it counts most.
Beyond the newsroom, Akiotu is thinking nation-building with the proposed BON National Development Lecture Series, he wants broadcasters to move from mere storytellers to agenda-setters, driving conversations that shape Nigeria’s future.
With the weight of expectation firmly on his shoulders, Tony Akiotu steps into office not just as chairman, but as the man broadcasters are betting on to steer Nigeria’s media industry out of turbulence and into a new era of resilience and relevance.
Currently, as Chairman/CEO of M4STV Communications Ltd, Akiotu is at the forefront of innovation in Nigeria’s evolving media space.
The platform has distinguished itself as a dynamic broadcast and digital streaming hub, seamlessly integrating traditional linear television with cutting-edge OTT services.
M4STV has also become the go-to station for live Nigeria Professional Football League matches and coverage involving the national teams, underscoring Akiotu’s enduring influence in sports broadcasting.
