Middle East tensions force Doha Diamond League postponement

The 2026 Diamond League season has suffered an early disruption, with the traditional curtain-raiser in Doha pushed back amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Organisers confirmed on Wednesday that the Qatar leg of the prestigious track and field series, originally scheduled for May 8, will now hold on June 19 “should conditions allow,” citing safety concerns for athletes, officials, and spectators.
The decision follows weeks of uncertainty in the region, as conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel continues to cast a shadow over major international events.
Although a two-week ceasefire was announced hours before the postponement, officials opted for caution.
In a statement, the Diamond League said it had been closely monitoring the situation in coordination with local organisers and authorities before arriving at the decision.
The shift means that Shanghai will now host the season-opening meet on May 16, marking a rare change in the league’s traditional calendar where Doha has often set the pace.
The rescheduling also brings a change in venue. With Qatar’s June temperatures expected to soar, the event will move to the Khalifa International Stadium, a facility equipped with advanced cooling technology that proved effective during the 2019 World Athletics Championships.
Qatar’s growing reputation as a global sports hub has been tested in recent months, with several high-profile events either postponed or cancelled due to the regional crisis.
The planned “Finalissima” clash between Argentina and Spain was scrapped, while the country’s MotoGP race was pushed to November.
Across the Gulf, Formula 1 races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have also been called off.
For athletes preparing for the Diamond League season, the reshuffle introduces fresh uncertainty, as the sport navigates yet another challenge beyond the track.
