Cissé steps down as Libya coach after challenging but “enriching” spell

Former Teranga Lions' coach Aliou Cissé has resigned from his role as head coach of the Libya national football team, bringing an end to a brief but eventful tenure with the Mediterranean Knights.
The Senegalese tactician announced his departure on Wednesday morning via his official Instagram account, shortly after overseeing Libya in a friendly match against Liberia national football team.
Cissé described his time with the team as an “incredibly enriching” experience, both professionally and personally.
“This month of March has been very special for me as it marked my final gathering as coach of the Libyan national team,” he wrote. “I could not leave without saying a word to you.”
Appointed in March 2025 on a two-year contract, Cissé’s stint lasted just 12 months.
During that period, he led Libya in 10 matches, recording three wins, five draws, and two defeats, results that reflected a team in transition but showed signs of steady growth.
Despite the modest record, Cissé expressed pride in his players and staff, acknowledging the challenges they faced together.
“I am proud of the work we accomplished and the results we achieved,” he said, adding that he remains confident in the team’s future progress.
However, behind the scenes, his tenure was not without difficulties. Financial issues, particularly delays in salary payments cast a shadow over his time in charge.
Although a portion of the outstanding payments was reportedly settled toward the end of March, sources indicate that the situation contributed significantly to his decision to step down.
Cissé also paid tribute to Libyan supporters for their passion and unwavering backing. “I will not forget you,” he said. “I know that our knights will always be able to count on you.”
His departure leaves Libya searching for a new direction as they aim to build on the foundation laid during his short spell in charge.
