Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses roared back to life on Saturday night, stunning the Super Falcons of Nigeria 1-0 in a high-intensity friendly at the Yaoundé Military Stadium.

Preparing steadily for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, the Lionesses have been camped at the Mundi Sports Complex, fine-tuning tactics and sharpening their edge.

But few gave them the nod against their perennial rivals. Nigeria, nine-time African champions and long-time tormentors of Cameroon, arrived as favourites.

Most of Cameroon’s squad, except Lamine Mana, ply their trade locally in the Guinness Super League, a detail that fueled doubts among sections of the fans.

Those doubts evaporated under the under intense heat and pressure on Saturday.

Roared on by a packed home crowd, Captain Ange Bawou marshalled her side with authority as they matched Nigeria’s physicality and pace stride for stride.

The visitors, led by the lively Babajide, pushed forward relentlessly, but Cameroon refused to blink. Every tackle was contested, every ball chased, every inch fiercely defended.

Both coaches rang changes, testing depth and strategy, but the rivalry lost none of its bite.

The breakthrough came from the bench and from the sharp eye of coach Mike Ndoumou. Yvana Mbomozomo was introduced and wasted no time in stamping her mark on the encounter.

Latching onto her chance, she unleashed a thunderous strike into the top corner, beyond the reach of goalkeeper Comfort, to send the stadium into delirium.

One goal. One statement victory.
It was more than just a friendly win. It was a symbolic breakthrough.

Cameroon’s last triumph over Nigeria came on November 11, 2012, in the third-place match of the Women’s AFCON in Malabo.

More than a decade later, the Lionesses have finally rediscovered their bite against their fiercest rivals.

With the return leg slated for March 3, momentum now swings in Cameroon’s favour and belief is growing that this new-look Lionesses side may be ready to rewrite the script ahead of AFCON 2026.
