REG lay down early title marker with rout of Inspired Generation
Rwanda Energy Group (REG) Basketball Club laid down an early marker in their quest for another Rwanda Basketball League title with a ruthless 116–70 demolition of Inspired Generation on Sunday, February 8, at the Petit Stade.
It was a statement performance from Odaudu Ogoh’s side, who wasted no time asserting their dominance.
Powered by the sharp shooting of small forward Prince Muhizi, REG stormed through the opening quarter 24–10 and tightened the screws in the second, outscoring their opponents 30–15 to race into a commanding 54–25 halftime lead.
The contest quickly turned one-sided after the break as REG shifted through the gears in the third quarter, piling on 36 points to Inspired Generation’s 19 to effectively put the game beyond reach.
Although both teams shared the final quarter 26–26, the damage had long been done.
Muhizi was the standout performer on the day, finishing with a game-high 26 points. New signing Frank Kamndoh, who arrived from Patriots in the offseason, also announced his presence in REG colours with an impressive double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds, adding four assists to cap a dominant all-round display.
Inspired Generation struggled to contain REG’s firepower despite the efforts of Samuel Asiribo, who led his team with 19 points, while Lambe-Embola Joseph added 17 in a losing cause.
Elsewhere, newly promoted East African University Rwanda (EAUR) made a dream start to life in the top flight, stunning United Generation Basketball (UGB) 78–63 to announce themselves as a side to watch this season.
In the women’s category, APR recorded a solid 71–52 victory over AZOMCO, while Kepler edged GS Marie Reine 54–42 in a closely contested encounter.
Meanwhile, REG also underlined their dominance in the women’s championship, opening their title defense in emphatic fashion with a crushing 117–51 win over GS Gahini.
With such commanding performances across the board, REG have sent a clear message early in the season, they are here to defend their crown and they mean business.
