The curtain fell on the 2nd Niger Delta Games in Benin City on Thursday night, but not before a powerful reminder that sport is bigger than medals.
Director General of the National Sports Commission, Honourable Bukola Olopade, officially declared the Games closed at a colourful ceremony in Edo State, delivering a stirring message on the transformative power of sports.
Representing Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Olopade made it clear that the festival was about more than podium finishes.
“Sports is not just about winning,” he declared. “It is about passion sharing, community engagement, economic empowerment, social integration and creating a feel-good atmosphere.”
The DG described the Games as a shining example of how sport can unite communities while stimulating local economies.
He revealed that data gathered from sporting events nationwide show tangible economic impact, from job creation and small business growth to increased corporate sponsorship and visibility for host cities.
In a bold pledge, Olopade assured that the Commission would continue to support the Games and its organisers, Dunamis Icon Ltd, alongside the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), to sustain and grow the regional fiesta.
He aligned the vision of the Games with President Tinubu’s broader agenda to reposition sports as a strategic driver of youth empowerment and national development.
“For the first time in this country, sport is being given its rightful position in government,” Olopade said, hinting at sweeping reform policies recently approved to upgrade sporting facilities nationwide and encourage private sector participation.
He also challenged Niger Delta governors to take ownership of the initiative, urging them to work closely with the NDDC and organisers to make the Games a permanent fixture on Nigeria’s sporting calendar.
In a firm nod to integrity, the DG commended the organisers for partnering with the Commission in the fight against age cheating and drug abuse, stressing the importance of clean competition.
He reserved special praise for the Governor of Edo State, regional leaders, the media and, above all, the athletes.
“The true winners of these Games are the young people of the Niger Delta,” he concluded.
And in trademark fashion, Olopade signed off to the roaring applause, “I close as a Warri boy with flavor, candor and drama.”
With that flourish, the second edition of the Niger Delta Games was officially declared closed and leaving behind not just champions, but a renewed belief in the power of sport to shape communities and futures.
