The Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has declared Team Delta battle-ready for the 2nd Niger Delta Games, promising a stronger, sharper and hungrier squad ahead of the regional showdown.
Receiving the Torch of Unity at Government House, Asaba, through his deputy Sir Monday Onyeme, the governor reaffirmed Delta’s commitment to sports development, youth empowerment and regional unity.
He stressed that sports remain a powerful engine for economic growth, peace and talent discovery across the Niger Delta.
The symbolic torch was handed over by Delta State Sports Commission Chairman, Mr. Onoriode Oborevwori, who praised the state government’s unwavering backing, lauded the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for driving the vision of making the region a sporting powerhouse.
Delta is not just showing up, they are coming for the crown.
Onoriode Oborevwori revealed that athletes are already deep in intensive training, determined to wrestle the title from defending champions Bayelsa when action begins at the iconic Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
Chief Consultant of the Games and Managing Director of Dunamis Icon, Sir Constantine Ikpokpo, said the competition was designed to unearth raw talents and curb athlete poaching that has long hampered development in the region.
In a ceremonial handover, the Unity Torch was passed to NDDC representative and former Nigerian swimming star Blessing Forcados for onward movement to Ondo State.
Teams are due in the Edo State capital on February 19, with the opening ceremony set for 5:30pm on Saturday in Benin City.
The message from Asaba is clear, Team Delta are not just participating. They are coming to conquer.
