...Three new competitions set to hit the circuit this season

The Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) has unveiled an expansive and strategically layered calendar of activities for the 2026 season, underlining its ambition to strengthen domestic competitions while maintaining Nigeria’s strong presence on the continental and global scrabble stage.
The year which kicked off with capacity building, as the NSF Technical Refresher Course runs online started January 24 to March 30, aimed at improving officiating standards nationwide.
This will be followed by the federation’s affiliation, subscription and licensing exercise between April and June, a move designed to properly streamline player participation ahead of a busy competitive window.
Competitive action begins in earnest in April with the Scrabuthlon in Lagos from April 3 to 5, running concurrently with the South-West Closed Championship in Osun.
Lagos will remain a focal point as it hosts the Dynamite Opens from April 17 to 18, before attention shifts north for the North-West Closed Championship in Kaduna later in the month.
Nigeria’s top players will also test themselves on the international scene early in the season, with participation expected at the MGI International Classic in the United Kingdom in May and the Causeway Challenge in Thailand at the end of the month.
Back home, Scrabblemania 4.0 in Lagos will serve as one of the year’s marquee domestic events in mid-May.
The second half of the year places strong emphasis on youth development and elite competition.
Nigerian prospects will feature at the World Youth Scrabble Championship in Kenya in August, alongside appearances at the National Youth Games in Delta State.
The Nigeria Open, slated for late September, is expected to attract top-ranked players from across the country.
October and November will be dominated by high-profile tournaments, including the Africa Scrabble Championship in Liberia, the Lekki Scrabble Classics, the Kano Opens, and Nigeria’s representation at the prestigious WESPA Open in Malta.
The season is set to wrap up with Scrabblemania 5.0 in Liberia and several yet-to-be-finalised regional and national events.
With activities spread across grassroots, elite, and international levels, the NSF’s 2026 calendar reflects a deliberate push to deepen talent development, expand competitive opportunities, and sustain Nigeria’s reputation as a powerhouse in global scrabble.
