NSC fires up 26 athletes for 2026 Commonwealth Games

Nigeria’s medal chase for the 2026 Commonwealth Games received a massive lift as the National Sports Commission (NSC) disbursed over ₦200 million in training grants to 26 elite athletes, signalling a bold statement of intent ahead of Glasgow 2026.
The grants, released through the NSC’s Elite and Podium Board, cut across both home-based and foreign-based athletes and span key medal sports including:
• Athletics
• Wrestling
• Weightlifting
• Taekwondo
• Powerlifting
• Para-sports
The funding is designed to cover critical training and preparation needs as Nigeria sharpens its edge for major international competitions.
The latest disbursement follows the recent establishment of the Elite and Podium Board, a body created to deliver a scientific, structured and performance driven support system for Nigeria’s top athletes.
Selection for the grants came after what the NSC described as a rigorous and professional evaluation process, ensuring only proven performers made the list.
Director General of the NSC, Honourable Bukola Olopade, said the move reflects the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to athlete welfare under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“Mr President believes strongly in the power of sports and the potential of the Nigerian athlete. That belief is already translating into increased funding and improved international results,” Olopade said.
He stressed that the grants, approved by the Yusuf Ali-led Elite and Podium Board, are part of a wider plan to restore confidence and stability in Nigerian sports.
“This is our way of reassuring our athletes that their welfare remains our utmost priority. When we take care of our athletes, they will take care of the country by winning medals,” he added.
Olopade noted that beyond the Commonwealth Games, the funding will also support preparations for other global events, including the Olympic Games, as the NSC continues to raise the bar under the leadership of Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko.
Significantly, this marks the second time in six months that the NSC has disbursed grants to elite athletes which is a clear evidence that Nigeria’s sports administrators are backing words with action.
With funding secured and focus sharpened, the message is loud and clear, Nigeria is gearing up to compete, not just participate, on the world stage.
