Uyo sparkled with colour, culture and confidence on Monday as the torch of the 2nd Niger Delta Games swept into the Akwa Ibom State capital amid pomp and pageantry, igniting excitement ahead of the Edo 2026 showpiece.

The flame, a symbol of peace, strength and unity arrived from Calabar as part of its tour of the nine Niger Delta states competing at the Games, scheduled for February 20–27 in Edo State.

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Edidiong Umoafia led the procession, flanked by a proud parade of Akwa Ibom’s past and present sports heroes.

The colourful march moved from the Ministry of Sports headquarters to the iconic Globe Roundabout on Wellington Bassey Way, where Governor Pastor Umo Eno stood ready to receive the torch alongside top government officials and Games organisers.

Speaking through the Commissioner for Education, Professor Ubong Umoh, Governor Eno reaffirmed Akwa Ibom’s readiness to compete fairly and fiercely at the Games.

He hailed the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Dunamis-Icon Limited for creating what he described as a powerful platform for unity, peace and talent discovery.

“The theme Beyond Oil–Harnessing Talents is a clear reminder that our greatest wealth lies not just beneath our soil, but within our people,” the Governor said, as he formally received and handed back the torch for its onward journey.

Games consultant Sir Itiako Ikpokpo praised the smooth organisation of the ceremony and assured stakeholders that all arrangements were in place for a seamless championship in Edo.

On his part, Akwa Ibom Sports Commissioner Elder Paul Bassey applauded the professionalism behind the Games, commending both the organisers and the NDDC for their commitment to grassroots sports development.

Goodwill messages flowed from the Head of Civil Service, Mrs Elsie Anietie Peters, and the Commissioner for Youth Development, Dr Eketette Ekanem, before the torch was officially handed over to Abia State, the next stop on the tour.

After visiting the remaining Niger Delta states, the flame will arrive at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, where it will burn throughout the Games which is a glowing symbol of regional pride, unity and sporting excellence.
