The Kaduna State has formally begun moves to take over the iconic Ahmadu Bello Stadium.
This follows a high-level meeting between Governor Uba Sani and the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Malam Shehu Dikko, in Abuja.
Governor Sani paid a courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters in the nation’s capital, where he requested the transfer of ownership and formal handover of the stadium from the Federal Government to the Kaduna State Government.
The proposed transfer is subject to the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
The move comes amid ongoing reconstruction work at the stadium, one of Nigeria’s historic sporting arenas.
The upgrade project is set to double its seating capacity from 16,000 to 32,000, positioning the facility to host larger national and international sporting events.
If approved, the transfer would place the management and future development of the stadium fully in the hands of the Kaduna State Government, a step seen as part of broader efforts to revitalise sports infrastructure and strengthen grassroots and elite sports development in the State.
The meeting underscores growing collaboration between Federal and State authorities aimed at repositioning key sporting assets across the country.
