The Executive Director of Sports Development and Operations, Edo State Sports Commission, Mrs. Sabina Chikere, has set a bold tone ahead of the second edition of the Niger Delta Games, describing the regional sporting festival as a one-of-a-kind event.
Mrs. Chikere made this known in an exclusive interview with FIRST ZEALMEDIACAST BLOG, assuring that preparations are in top gear as Edo State readies itself to host the competition.
“So far, so good. Preparations are in top gear, our athletes are ready, and we have been preparing for some time now. This is the second edition; we participated in the first one in Akwa Ibom. Fortunately, we are hosting this time, and we are hosting to win,” she said.
She explained that the state’s approach is a deliberate and strategic effort aimed at discovering, grooming, and showcasing young talents across the Heartbeat Nation.
According to her, the Sports Commission has gone deep into communities to uncover raw potential.
“We went to schools, villages, and local government areas to scout for raw talents that we can develop,” she stated, stressing that talent discovery remains the core objective of the Niger Delta Games.
Mrs. Chikere further revealed that experienced coaches have been engaged and mandated to ensure the selection of the right athletes while maintaining strict adherence to rules and standards.
“We are doing what is required in terms of preparation and providing the athletes with everything they need to participate and win. We are preparing very seriously,” she added.
A key figure in Edo State’s ongoing sports transformation, Mrs. Chikere emphasized that the Niger Delta Games represent more than a quest for short-term success, but a sustainable pathway for long-term athlete development.
“This way, we will always have athletes ready to replace our elite performers, ensuring that the Nigerian flag continues to fly high,” she said.
She concluded by noting that beyond medals, the Games offer a vital platform for grassroots athletes to gain access to quality coaching, exposure, and a clear route into elite competition.
“The Games provide opportunities for talents that may otherwise remain unseen, giving them a chance to grow and compete at the highest level,” she stressed.
