African club football has received a significant financial boost after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced a major increase in prize money for its flagship competitions, the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.
Following approval at the CAF Executive Committee meeting in February, the winner of the Champions League will now pocket $6 million, while the Confederation Cup champion will earn $4 million.
The decision, backed by CAF president Patrice Motsepe, takes immediate effect and applies to the final stages of the ongoing 2025/26 season.
CAF confirmed that the total prize fund for the Champions League has risen to $19.6 million, while the Confederation Cup will now distribute $11.9 million in total.
In a move designed to support clubs across the continent, teams eliminated in the preliminary rounds will also benefit.
The participation grant has been doubled from $50,000 to $100,000 to help ease travel and organisational expenses, particularly for smaller sides competing on the continental stage.
The revised structure will apply to clubs that have qualified for the March 2026 quarter-finals, including Morocco’s AS FAR and RS Berkane in the Champions League, as well as Wydad AC and Olympic Safi in the Confederation Cup.
CAF explained that the financial uplift is a result of the organisation’s return to profitability, driven largely by growth in television rights and sponsorship revenue.
The governing body added that the long-term objective is to strengthen the financial foundation of African club football and enhance competitiveness across its competitions.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially confirmed a major increase in prize money for its two main club competitions, with the CAF Champions League winner now set to receive $6 million and the CAF Confederation Cup winner $4 million.
The decision was approved during the CAF Executive Committee meeting in February and backed by CAF president Patrice Motsepe.
The new amounts take effect immediately and apply to the final stages of the current 2025/26 season.
