The Ghana Basketball Association (GBBA) lit up its Elective Congress in Sunyani with a moment of pure admiration and respect as it conferred Honorary Membership on Colonel Sam Ahmedu (Rtd), one of African basketball’s most influential figures.

The announcement—kept tightly under wraps, triggered an eruption of applause as delegates rose to their feet to salute a man widely regarded as a pillar of West African basketball.

Ahmedu, the respected President of FIBA Africa Zone 3, has spent decades quietly powering the growth of the game across the sub-region, with Ghana becoming one of the biggest beneficiaries of his leadership.

From shaping development programmes and strengthening administrative structures to pushing Ghana’s voice into top-tier FIBA governance, the retired Nigerian military officer has been a steady force behind the scenes. Coaches, referees, and administrators across Ghana have felt the impact of his commitment to capacity-building and long-term development.

The GBBA hailed the honour as a celebration of “a man whose influence transcends borders,” acknowledging his steady support during key transitional phases in Ghana basketball.

For Ahmedu, who oversees basketball affairs across eight West African nations—this recognition adds another layer to a legacy built on service, mentorship, and relentless advocacy for the sport.

More importantly, the gesture signals a fresh wave of collaboration between the GBBA and FIBA Africa Zone 3, with both parties looking to elevate the region’s basketball footprint.

As Ghana aims to climb higher on the African basketball ladder, Colonel Sam Ahmedu’s honorary induction stands as both a tribute to his past impact and a powerful nod to the future he continues to shape.
