Bulgarians search for ‘right’ location for new national stadium
Bulgaria’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Ivan Peshev, has confirmed that the ministry has begun the search for a suitable location to build a new national stadium. He stressed that the project is a high-priority item on the government’s management programme.
In an interview with Bulgarian National Television (BNT), Minister Peshev announced that four potential sites have currently been identified that meet specific requirements, and one of them will ultimately be chosen. He did not disclose the precise locations of the sites.
“I am absolutely convinced that we must build a new national stadium. This is set out in the programme. The working group is currently active – four sites have been identified. The group includes representatives from the Ministry of Regional Development, Sofia Municipality, and the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU). Once we select a site that meets all requirements, we will look for financing mechanisms,” said Peshev.
The existing ‘Vasil Levski’ National Stadium, which Bulgaria uses for its home matches, was built in 1953 and is located in the centre of the capital, Sofia. The facility underwent its most extensive reconstruction in 2002, reducing its capacity to 44,000 seats to meet UEFA requirements.
Due to various issues in recent years, Bulgaria has begun using different stadiums across the country for its home fixtures. A significant number of these matches have been played at the current champion Ludogorets’ stadium, Huvepharma Arena in Razgrad, and the modernized Hristo Botev Stadium in Plovdiv.
It remains unclear how the new national stadium project will be financed. The facility is expected to be constructed on the outskirts of Sofia.
