UEFA’s top table head to Tirana to decide host cities and Women’s Nations League bonus pot

UEFA’s Executive Committee is meeting in Tirana, Albania, this Thursday with two major items on the agenda, the bonus payments for the 2025 Women’s Nations League finals, and confirmation of the hosts for the 2027 Champions League Final.

The 2027 Champions League had originally been awarded to Milan and the San Siro Stadium, however UEFA removed the final over uncertainty surrounding ‘refurbishment works’ planned for the stadium.

Azerbaijan submitted a bid to host at the Baku Olympic Stadium in Baku, while Spain also submitted a bid for the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid.

Despite no official announcement having been made, Rafael Louzán, president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), told press in May that the Metropolitano had been selected as the venue for the 2027 final. In May the Europa League final was also hosted in Spain at the Nuevo San Mamés, in Bilbao.

The Metropolitano has hosted the Champions League final before, in 2019, when Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the final.

The official announcement of the venue will be made once the UEFA executive committee have met this week.

Bonus payments

The Women’s Euro this summer in Switzerland saw a €41 million total prize money pot a – 156% increase on 2022 and the first time that players received a guaranteed percentage of the rewards. All 16 teams received a fixed €1.8 million participation fee for qualifying, accounting for 70% of the overall allocated prize money.

The remaining 30% was made up of performance bonuses, with teams receiving €50,000 for a draw and €100,000 for a win in the group stages, and staggered bonuses for each knockout stage.

The finals of the 2025 Women’s Nations League will see Germany-France and Sweden-Spain compete the semi-finals over two legs and the end of October and early November, with the finals and third placed play off also competed over two legs at the end of November and early December.

The prize money is unlikely to reach the heights of the Euros but it still expected to be a record amount for this competition.

Other agenda items are host appointments for: 2027 UEFA Women’s Champions League final; 2026 UEFA Futsal Champions League finals; 2027 UEFA Futsal Under-19 EURO; and 2027 UEFA Women’s Futsal EURO

Before the meeting, a grassroots football festival will take place at the FSHF Football House in Tirana as part of the UEFA Football in Schools programme with an opening ceremony attended by UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin and Albanian Football Association president Armand Duka.
