Nigerian goalkeepers need more incentive and opportunities to thrive

By Mishael Emmanuel

A growing number of influencial personalities in the across the country are of the opinion that more effort is needed for Nigeria to discover and harness young talents that are so abundant in the domestic scene.

This group of enthusiasts strongly believe in Nigeria's ability to excel on and off the pitch, but most especially is an area of the beautiful game that requires particular skill, flair and composure, Goaltending.

And the latest figure to join the train of change, is none other than Super Eagles and Galatasaray star-attacker, Victor Osimhen.

The prolific scorer is of the opinion that, a good number of our home based shotstoppers have what it takes to withstand the rigours of African football and if given the opportunity, will excel in the colours of Nigeria.

“Before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone, when we were still training in Lagos, Ahmed Musa took an interest in the new goalkeeper, Adebayo Adeleye. After training sessions he would talk with him, one-on-one, encouraging and advising him, so it was quite obvious that he was going to make his debut.

“But the composure he brought to the game was top notch and that really helped us to get back into the game. Towards the final 10 minutes, he was so focused. I personally sought him out after the game and thanked him, like: ‘Thank you so very much, you were a key member of the team, today.’ Because when Sierra Leone went 2-0 up, they had really gain the momentum and this guy was very composed.”

For your information, Nigeria went on to win the encounter, 3-2. The Super Eagles also went on to Qualify for the 2023 AFCON, in Côte D'Ivoire, were they finished as runners-up.

It's been quite a while since Adeleye made his debut for the Super Eagles but one thing is certain, with more incentives and opportunities the local talents will not only thrive but as bring glory to the nation.

Another reoccurring voice in the passionate call for change is another high-power individual in the footballing circle, but this time from the goalkeeper training department. As former Shooting Stars (3SC), goalkeeper trainer, John Dosu, enumerated candid remarks that add fillips to this report.

In his passionate defense of NPFL Goalkeepers, Dosu emphasized that the country is blessed to the limit with footballing talents and the goalkeepers are no exception.

“I strongly disagree with the notion that the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) lacks talented goalkeepers. While it's true that some goalkeepers may not perform up to par, it's unfair to generalize that the entire league is devoid of skilled shot-stoppers.

“The NPFL has produced exceptional goalkeepers who have gone on to excel in top leagues abroad. These goalkeepers have demonstrated their capabilities and potential, and with the right exposure, more talented individuals can emerge.”

Dosu talked big on a fact that is at the heart of the issue, recognizing and grooming these talents.

“The league has a rich history of nurturing talented players, including goalkeepers, who have successfully transitioned to top clubs globally. It's essential to acknowledge and appreciate the skills and abilities of NPFL players, rather than dismissing the league as a whole.”

John Dosu who recently signed for NNL side, Inter Lagos, added that aspiring football players need more support and opportunities to attain world standard.

“Let's give credit where credit is due. The NPFL has talented goalkeepers who deserve recognition and opportunities to shine. With proper exposure and support, these goalkeepers can continue to excel and make a name for themselves in the football world,” He stated.

The next voice on this list of talent seekers, is a notable face in football scene in the country, Femi Thomas and his suggestion is similar to what is also obtainable in National Federations, the world over who seek to project local talents.

“It will be nice for every NPFL club to register a young goalkeeper in their squad, so that it will to close up the gap when older goalkeepers are retiring.

“I know it is not by force but a good gesture to help bridge up the gap, in so doing, the young one can pick up experience with time.

“Late Peter Rufai was in camp with Peter Fregene and Emmanuel Okala at the national team from whom he learnt a lot, why is difficult for us to go back to the younger ones put them with the experience ones for them to learn so that by the time they come of age, we won't be saying they lack experience and confidence,” He concluded.

Coaches John Dosu and Femi Thomas who last season, partnered to pick out the NPFL rookie goaltenter of the Season Award, have also promised to continuity to the gesture for another season.

John Dosu, has also pledged to extend this noble gesture to the NNL. With 50,000 naira up for grabs by the NNL goalkeeper of the season.

In a related development, former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa has promised to reward the NPFL goalkeeper of the week, with a cash incentive.

The winner of the weekly award which in its third year, will be selected by member judges of the NPFL goalkeepers' platform.

The first have a taste of the weekly NPFL incentive, Bayelsa United goalkeeper Ezekiel Clinton. While Bayelsa United Coach Monday Odigie on winning Coach of the Week.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hammed Folorunsho has announced plans to support the best shotstopper in the Nigeria National League (NNL).

Mr. Folorunsho who promised to support the NNL Goalkeeper of the Season with a brand new premium quality, goalkeeper' glove, stated that this gesture is aimed at encouraging and motivating young and talented shotstopper in the league to strive for excellence.
