Morocco opens Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat after 2-year rebuild
Morocco has unveiled the rebuilt Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, with Crown Prince Moulay Hassan officially inaugurating the 68,500-seater venue earlier this week.
The original ground, which first opened in 1983, was demolished in 2023 to clear space for a modern replacement – which was rebuilt in two years, record time that is reportedly being recognised by Guinness World Records as the fastest stadium construction ever achieved.
The project was overseen by Moroccan firm Orange Atelier in partnership with leading design specialists Populous, whose stadium portfolio includes Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London and Qatar’s Lusail Stadium.
The Rabat development is now the second largest stadium in the country, but not for long. The government has also begun constructing a 100,000-seater stadium in Casablanca, with their headlights firmly fixed on hosting the World Cup final in five years’ time.
While the long-term focus is on the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the stadium will have plenty to showcase before then. It is set to be a key venue for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with Morocco staging the tournament for the first time since 1988 later this year.
The Cup of Nations had originally been scheduled for mid-2025, but CAF shifted the dates to the end of the year thanks to FIFA hogging the summer spot with its expanded 32-team Club World Cup in the U.S.
