David Coote pleads not guilty to making indecent video of child

Former Premier League referee David Coote has pleaded not guilty to making an indecent video of a child.

The 43-year-old was charged on August 12 following an investigation by Nottinghamshire Police and appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Coote wore a blue suit, white shirt and black tie and shoes. He sat at the back of court and first spoke to confirm his name and date of birth and then entered his plea.

Coote then asked for the trial to be heard in front of a jury at Crown Court rather than at Magistrates. A date was set for a pre-trial hearing at Nottingham Crown Court for October 9.

Nottinghamshire Police said the charge related to a video file recovered by officers in February. The charge is of the most serious ‘Category A’ offence.

Coote, who is currently on conditional bail, was sacked last year by Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO) over comments made in a video about former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

After his dismissal in December, Coote was later given an eight-week ban by the Football Association. He is also banned by UEFA until June 2026.

Coote spoke about being in a dark place at the time the video was taken. He also said that he had hidden the fact he was gay during his career for fear of subsequent abuse.
