Canada's Evan Dunfee became the first gold medallist of the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025, winning the men's 35km race walk in 2:28:22.

Dunfee, who held the world record in this discipline for a short period earlier this year, came through in the second half to build up a lead of almost one minute.

Despite suffering cramp in the closing stages, he held on to win his first global title.

Brazil's Caio Bonfim took silver in 2:28:55.

The host nation also had reason to celebrate as Japan's Hayato Katsuki claimed bronze in 2:29:16.

No African was found in the top ten of the men's race on Day 1 of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
