Mascherano caught on TV sending instructions to bench after being sent off

Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano, sent off just before half time in their quarter final game against Mexico’s Tigres in the Leagues Cup, was later spotted passing instructions on to his assistant coach from the stands.

Mascherano, who was sent off after arguing with the referee, was later pictured seated in the stands animatedly speaking on his phone and passing instructions to his assistant coach Lucas Rodriguez Pagano.

Pagano was on the pitch sidelines and was also pictured on his phone.

Rules prevent a coach who has been sent off from passing any instructions to his team’s bench.

Inter Miami were 1-0 up when the pictures of Mascherano were broadcast. They went on to win the match 2-1, both their goals being scored by Luis Suarez from the penalty spot. Inter Miami were without the injured Lionel Messi.

The Leagues Cup is a relatively new competition played between clubs from the MLS and LigaMX in the middle of the MLS season. Inter Miami won the competition in 2023, with Messi playing a key role.

The 2025 format of the competition sees all 18 Liga MX teams in competition with 18 of the 30 MLS sides, for a total of 36 participants. Each team plays three games against teams from the other league and the top four teams from each league advance to the knockout stage.

Inter Miami will now face Orlando City in the semi-final next week at Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium.
