Former Super Eagles midfielder Engr. Waidi Akanni, has expressed his gratitude and appreciation to all who helped in ensuring a befitting burial for Nigeria legend, Peter Rufai.
The Former Chairman of Lagos State Football Association (LSFA), expressed his profound gratitude and appreciation to the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Lagos State, Tayo Ayinde, for approving the sum of 15 million naira to assist the family of late Peter Rufai with the burial ceremony.
Engineer Akanni also appreciated the Director-General of Lagos State Sports Commission, L.F Chairman of Benue State Football Association, Barrister Paul Edeh and the President, Nath Boys FC, Mr. Yemi Idowu, for their generous support, and donation of a million naira, each to the funeral arrangements.
The former boss of Lagos State Football Association also thanked Senator Abba Moro and the current Chairman of Lagos State Football Association, Hajji Gafar Liameed for their contribution of N500,000 each, to the family of the deceased.
He also put up some kind words for key members in the Nigeria Football fraternity who came to the aid of grieving family. Former Super Eagles attacker, Odion Ighalo and the owner and founder of Owu Sports, Barrister Tunji Brown donated N300,000 and jerseys for the valedictory football match in honour of the legendary Super Eagles shotstopper, respectfully.
His words: "I'm very grateful to all these great people and organisations that responded swiftly to our cries for support. These donations were paid into the account of late Super Eagles goalkeeper’ sister, Dele Rufai."
He went on to explain that he had to reach out to many of his associates and friends for financial support, because of his understanding of government procedures, as the approved funds may not arrive early enough for the proper planning of the funeral.
The now retired midfield maestro, who provided the entertainment, food, drinks and all the necessary logistics for the ceremony, concluded by praying for blessings and prosperity of all who distinguished themselves with their unwavering support to the family of late Peter Rufai.
"I pray that God bless the members of Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN), Lagos Legends Club (LLC), Lagos State Sports Commission, Lagos State Football Association (LSFA), former footballers, Nigeria Football Supporters Club and of course, members of the press, that turned up to celebrate the legendary goalkeeper.”
