Battle-hardened Amin beats General Madout to South Sudan FA presidency
Francis Amin has defeated incumbent General Augustine Maduot to return for a second term as the president of the South Sudan Football Federation (SSFF).
Amin received 26 of 38 votes in the elections, with incumbent Madout receiving the other 12, to obtain a mandate until 2029. In a statement, the SSFF wrote: “President-elect Francis Amin confirmed his dedication to working alongside his predecessor and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to elevate the standards of football in South Sudan. He assured that he aims to build upon the foundation laid by Mr. Augustino Maduot.”
“The outgoing president, Mr. Augustino Maduot, expressed his commitment to support the new leadership, emphasising the importance of unity in propelling South Sudan football to new heights.”
Amin served as SSFF president from 2017 to 2021 and ran on a ticket of football development. Makur Majok and Deng Abdelrahman Aguer will serve as vice presidents.
Maduot led the federation for the past four years but conceded defeat. “This defeat will not send me away from the sport,” he said.
He had defeated Amin in 2021 when the latter stood for re-election. During Amin’s first spell, South Sudan became a FIFA member and participated for the first time in the World Cup qualifiers.
But his reign was not without drama as controversy over the stalled renovation of Juba National Stadium, despite funding from world governing body FIFA, took hold.
