The 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF), tagged Gateway Games, holding across selected venues in Ogun State saw the rise of many young and talented sports men and women, some of who will go on to represent the country in the near future

One such talent was George Iniobong, a 22-year-old judoka representing Benue State, who took down some heavyweights in judo, in his quest for recognition at the biennial sports feast.

Iniobong who consistently delivered impressive showings throughout the tournament, missed out on a gold medal, with a narrow loss to host Ogun State in the last moments of the final, on Sunday.

George Iniobong settled for silver medal in the men’s -60kg judo event. His achievement, takes Benue State medal tally in the multi-sport event to two silver and seven bronze medals.

Speaking with journalists after the contest, Iniobong expressed gratitude to Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, for supporting the athletes’ participation in the festival.

The determined fighter expressed disappointment at not claiming gold medal, but emphasized that he remained optimistic about future opportunities.

“I’m encouraged by this experience and promise to give my best to win gold for Benue in the future. I thank Governor Alia, the Commissioner for Sports, my coaches, and my family for their unwavering support,” Iniobong said.

In Kickboxing, another member of Team Benue, Ukpe Augustina Ime, made her mark as she came off with a bronze medal for her efforts in the +70kg category.
