Technical issues scupper FIFA World Cup 2026 ticket sale launch

The first phase ticket sale for FIFA’s 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico was marred by technical issues, leaving some fans frustrated.

The first of ‘several 2026 World Cup ticket sale phases’ opened on Wednesday, with Visa customers – Visa being a top-tier FIFA sponsor – who were successful in an exclusive lottery able to purchase tickets.

However, some of those fans had to deal with long wait times and error messages, The Athletic reported. In response, FIFA explained that, “We are experiencing initial extended wait times as the registration period opens.”

When Inside World Football accessed the ticket sales platform, it also encountered long wait times and error messages.

The first sales phase will end on September 19, when applications will be subject to a random draw. Successful applicants will then be notified and given time slots from October 1 to purchase tickets. There is no guarantee that successful applicants will be able to acquire their preferred match tickets.

At this stage, fans do not know which teams they will watch when applying for and buying tickets. The World Cup draw is scheduled to take place on December 5 in the US capital, Washington D.C. A second sales phase “Early Ticket Draw” will be launched before the December event.

After the final draw, FIFA will organise a third sales phase “Random Selection Draw” before opening last-minute sales on a first-come, first-served basis closer to the tournament.

FIFA will put 6.5 million tickets on sale for the first 48-team World Cup, hosted by the triumvirate of the United States, Mexico and Canada. The world governing body expects to generate $3 billion from ticketing revenue, but FIFA has received backlash for implementing dynamic ticket pricing, a strategy that ties prices to demand from fans.

Tickets for the group stages start at $60 but are as high as $6730 for the final at MetLife Stadium.
