Santos get green light for new stadium
Brazilian club Santos have been given the go-ahead to replace their famous Vila Belmiro stadium with a new 30,000-seat arena after the City Hall approved the project.
The redevelopment will see the demolition of the century-old Estádio Urbano Caldeira, with construction of the new arena expected to take around three years. Once complete, the new ground will be almost double the size of their 16,000-seater current stadium, which has been the club’s home since 1916.
The R$700 million (€111m/$129m) project will be delivered in partnership with construction and real estate giant WTorre, and includes upgrades to traffic access and parking around the stadium.
Vila Belmiro has been home to some of the greatest players in football history, but the club believes a modern, multi-purpose venue is essential to compete on and off the pitch in the coming decades.
Having been relegated and promoted back to the Brazilian Serie A in recent seasons and now equipped with its former golden boy Neymar Jr, the club is in a state of transition and now wants to move to meet growing fan demand.
Rogério Santos, Mayor of Santos, said: “The Santos FC and the City of Santos enjoy great bonhomie. It is for the Santos FC that the City of Santos is known globally. By giving our nod to the above venue project we have taken a significant step forward for the club and the City which will soon boast a chic arena which will be able to stage major acts as well as concerts as presently we lack the infrastructure to host showcase events.”
Representing WTorre, the Director of New Projects and Business, Luiz Otávio do Amaral Alves, said: “We are estimating an investment of approximately R$700 million with a construction period of 40 months. The new stadium will have a capacity of 30,000 and will provide an enriching fan experience.
“We will revitalise the whole area skirting the planned venue with levelled sidewalks, re-landscaped grounds, cameras integrated into the City’s security system to ensure the safety quotient is high in the venue, improved signages, bike paths, and a sturdy lighting system. We will also give importance to the sustainability factor. Shops and restaurants will also come up. The planned venue will also have a devoted parking space.”
