Greek ref pulls out of league game after being sent bullets in the post
Greek referee Alexandros Tsamouris, has withdrawn from a third-tier national league (Gamma Ethniki) match after receiving threats, including a package containing live bullets, local media reported.
Tsamouris declared his inability to officiate the match between Pyrgos and Zakynthos, citing personal safety concerns following a string of threatening messages that escalated from verbal attacks to the delivery of bullets.
The EPO swiftly condemned the acts, replacing Tsamouris with referee Marios Syngoris for the scheduled game.
The Hellenic Football Federation issued a statement denouncing the intimidation tactics, saying: “We condemn every form of violence, threats, and practices that are reminiscent of the underworld. Such actions have no place anywhere, and the Authorities must fully investigate the case and locate who is behind the threats that led referee Alexandros Tsamouris to declare his inability to officiate the Gamma Ethniki match between Pyrgos and Zakynthos.”
The EPO’s Central Refereeing Committee (KED) and the Federation expressed their full confidence in Tsamouris, promising to stand by him for any necessary support.
Tsamouris is preparing to file an official complaint regarding the incident. The police have been notified, and a preliminary investigation is expected to be launched immediately to determine the source of the threat.
