More Mixed Martial Arts events will be staged in Nigeria and the West Africa sub region in the days to come following the success of the just-concluded four-day AFC World Series in the City of Aquatic Splendor - Lagos.
This was made public by the dynamic and proactive sports administrator behind the AFC World Series Raad Aswani to FIRST ZEALMEDIACAST BLOG after the four days of gruelling and equally exciting show of strength, techics, tactics and the desire to over come challenges.
Raad Aswani had some pleasant words for all participants at the championship, describing it as successful and pledging to invest more funds in future events.
He said, the thrust of the Championship in Lagos was achieved, with participants delivering top-notch performances that proved Nigeria could develop into a hub for elite MMA fighters with proper funding.
“The quality of production was rock solid. The fighters were brilliant, while officiating, medicals and government presence all contributed to a hugely successful tournament.
The future is very bright. This year’s edition was well delivered and electrifying, especially with government backing, which made the whole experience worthwhile,” Aswani said.
President of the Nigeria Mixed Martial Arts Federation, Henry George, described the event as a beautiful showcase of skill and electrifying drama from great fighters.
Ayu Jonah from Benue, who won all four fights to claim the 61kg title, said it was a worthwhile experience.
“I work hard all year round. It feels great to compete in an organised championship and win. I give kudos to the organisers,” Jonah said.
Stephen Takpe, who lost to Jonah, admitted defeat to a more experienced opponent.
“It was my first amateur tournament, giving me the exposure I needed. I look forward to more opportunities like this in the future,” Takpe said.
In another bout, Victor Nwoke dominated the 85kg category, winning two fights to reach the third round of the competition. He thanked the organisers, praising their efforts to promote MMA as a platform for bringing athletes out of obscurity.
Over 80 fights took place between September 11 and September 14 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
The next event is likely to take place in December, featuring the 24 winners; the first, second and third place positions returning for a contenders tournament, alongside eight wild cards to give eliminated fighters another chance to compete in the ranking system.
